3/20/2001 Telus‘ Chooses Itronix GoBook‘ Rugged Wireless Notebooks For Major Telco Field Computing Application Deployment of 1,000 GoBook‘ Notebook Computers Continues Long Itronix/Telus Working Relationship, Keeping Telus Field Technicians at Leading Edge of Wireless Technology SPOKANE, WA-Itronix Corporation, a world leader in the design and manufacture of ruggedized, wireless mobile computing solutions, today announced that Canadian telecommunications giant Telus‘ Corporation has completed deployment of 1,000 new Itronix GoBook‘ computers, the world’s fastest rugged notebook PC for field-based mobile workforces. The Itronix GoBook, built in part with input from Telus executives, puts Telus’ field installation and repair technicians at the leading edge of wireless computing technology, demonstrating the business benefits resulting from the companies’ working relationship. Telus has been a pioneer in the use of wireless mobile computers in the telecommunications industry. It was the first to deploy large numbers of wireless notebooks to telco field technicians, and today it maintains one of the largest deployments in North America. The company says its strategic decision has been justified by measurable increases in efficiency and customer satisfaction. "Deployment of wireless technology in the telecommunications industry may appear to be a logical decision. However, five years ago that wasn’t the case," said Hugh Johnson, Program Director at Telus Corporation. "The easy access to ‘dialtone’ by our technicians made wireless seem unnecessary. But we were able to prove through time management studies that a technician could pick up roughly one hour every day by going wireless. Now, our people wouldn’t have it any other way." A History of Innovation Telus, a Canadian operating unit of Verizon, runs its GoBook wireless field service deployment on the company’s own Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) network, providing reliable and constant high-speed digital connectivity for Telus’ in-field personnel.
