BellSouth's TechPlus System Wins SUPERQuest Award at SUPERCOMM '99


ATLANTA, June 14, 1999 -- BellSouth Corporation (NYSE: BLS) today announced it has received SUPERQuest's "Best Built Operations Support System" award, recognizing the outstanding achievements in network technology implementation by BellSouth and its partners, Andersen Consulting; Informix Software, Inc.; Itronix Corporation; and Sun Microsystems.The winning entry, BellSouth's TechPlus(SM) mobile computer platform, provides more than 15,000 BellSouth service technicians with the ability to quickly access information about customers, phone lines and tests, using a rugged wireless "Itronix X-C 6250 notebook" laptop computer.

The winning entry, BellSouth's TechPlus(SM) mobile computer platform, provides more than 15,000 BellSouth service technicians with the ability to quickly access information about customers, phone lines and tests, using a rugged wireless laptop computer. This system is the first of its kind used by a Regional Bell Operating Company. TechPlus already has provided improvements in customer service and technician efficiencies, proving to be of economic value to the company.

The application utilizes database technology from Informix Software, a server computing platform from Sun Microsystems; XC6250 rugged wireless notebooks from Itronix Corporation; and digital packet radio technology provided by BellSouth Wireless Data. Andersen Consulting designed the technical architecture and led the implementation and rollout of the system.

The SUPERQuest Awards are co-sponsored by SUPERCOMM and CMP Media's tele.com and InternetWeek publications. The awards recognize the implementation of public and private network solutions and the core products and technologies involved in those solutions.

Awards were given in 14 categories, and the competition drew more than 120 entrants. Industry experts from the United States Telephone Association, the Telecommunications Industry Association, CMP Media, the International Communications Association and the International Engineering Consortium judged this year's competition.

BellSouth's TechPlus system was nominated for the SUPERQuest Award by Informix Software.
